I am the third of four children with two wonderful parents. I have spent the majority of my life in Indianapolis, Indiana, which I absolutely love. Before that, I was lucky enough to live in London for four years after being born in St. Paul, Minnesota. Growing up in Indianapolis made me aware that it is a place that I would like to have a family one day. It is a big city with a small midwestern town feel. I attended Cathedral High School where I had wonderful teachers and was immersed in a loving environment. I ran Cross Country for four years and played Basketball for one year. Cathedral had a major part in shaping who I am today.
I couldn't have been more fortunate to end up at Saint Mary's College for the last four years. I have been able to go to a small school while benefiting from a large school environment in Notre Dame. I have met people that will remain lifelong friends. With no idea what I wanted to do upon entering SMC, I became a Communication Studies Major and learned quickly that it was the perfect choice for me. My experience here has been incredible and, if given the chance, I would do it all over again.

Excerpt taken from my Senior Comprehensive: MTV has become an extremely important aspect of popular culture, both in the past and in the present, as its success has reached a global level. “It would have been nearly impossible for the many of us studying popular culture, youth culture, popular music, or television in the 1980s to avoid attending to MTV” (Jones, 2005, p. 84). Part of MTV’s success has emerged from the fact that it has been altered and tweaked to conform to different religions and cultures all over the world. “MTV now follows a policy of airing local content in at least 70% of its programming, thereby ‘successfully replac[ing] its ‘Classic Coke’ global image with a retailored programme [sic] format that meets local political, advertiser, and consumer tastes’” (Jones, p. 85). MTV shifted from music videos to live and reality programming in an attempt to capture audiences “for longer periods of time than music videos would permit” (Jones, p. 87). As Jones points out, channels which rival MTV follow the unwritten rules that MTV has established throughout the years, especially with reality television. MTV has had its foot in the reality television pool since 1992 with the filming and airing of The Real World: New York, a show which would have a larger impact on television than anyone could have imagined at its initial debut. Co-creators Jonathan Murray and Mary-Ellis Bunim worked on pitching shows to networks for three years before hearing of MTV’s interest in a prime-time soap opera in 1991. The duo was concerned that a script-based soap opera would be too expensive, which is when the idea of casting real kids and throwing them all into a house together sounded like an interesting alternative. They originally got the idea from the Fox show called American Family. “We were following families through crisis and transition in their lives, then editing them like a drama” (Albiniak, 2004, p. 45). The pitch to MTV was a hit, and the deal became final that same afternoon. Since then, many types of reality television have taken off. Reality has now become somewhat of a phenomenon for television. “Some consider it to be the most significant development in recent American television history” (Ebersole, et al., 2007, p. 23). The Real World is described as one of the primary influences of present day reality television in many different aspects. A variety of different television shows such as America’s Next Top Model, Big Brother, and The Bachelor have taken on The Real World format in terms of living in a large house, talking in confessionals, eavesdropping, having cameras all around the house, and so on. MTV chief Brian Graden describes The Real World as “quite simply the undisputed granddaddy of modern, commercial reality television” (Keveney, 2007).
